Corn germ – is a by-product of the corn milling process and represents approximately 8–14% of the whole corn kernel. It is primarily used for the extraction of corn oil and the production of gluten, but it also plays an important role in the feed industry as a high-energy feed material. Product contains between 10–18% natural oil, making it a valuable raw material for vegetable oil production. In addition to oil, it is rich in protein, starch, sucrose, and minerals, which makes it a desirable ingredient in compound feed for livestock, poultry, and fish.
It is particularly valued in animal nutrition for its high caloric content and natural vitamin composition, including: Vitamin E (high concentration), β-Carotene (provitamin A), B-complex vitamins: Thiamine (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Folic acid (B9), Pantothenic acid (B5), Biotin (B7), Vitamin K
Due to its dense nutrient profile, corn germ is often used as:
• A raw material for oil pressing in the food industry
• A component in high-energy feed formulations for cattle, pigs, poultry, and aquaculture
• A natural source of vitamins and essential fatty acids in animal diets
• A fertile base for functional food ingredients and dietary supplements
The chemical composition of corn germ is 95–99% similar to that of whole corn, concentrating most of the kernel’s nutritional value.
